The creators of DYO have had long service in the field of Disability, since 1999 and have met people of so many various different abilities, learning with them and from them, about how best to draw their optimal. Experiences have been gained working in innovative non-government services in early moves to community, to state funded, private services, and university teaching over the 25 plus years. If you are on the NDIS, DYO experience includes leading teams with NDIS service, including at the time of the introduction of the NDIS, garnering understanding of the system, along with the benefits and challenges it has bought to the sector.
DYO would like to bring models of collaboration, codesign and education to promote optimisation of participation, dignity and demystify the therapy experience, to involve everyone in the processes that enables health, wellbeing, lifelong learning and personalised participation at the optimal level. Building trust, understanding what matters to you, and listening to understand views on what could be addressed together. DYO can assist with reactive urgent needs (e.g., “I need a wheelchair,”) as well as a more proactive, self-management, health literacy approach over time. People have varying confidence in their self-ability and their ability to have informed choice and control in their life. DYO will aim to partner with you where you are at and help you build this capacity as suitable too.

Equipment/Assistive Technology advice or prescription. Could a piece of equipment or technology assist you to draw your optimal? If you need to blow your nose you may use a tissue. Likewise, lots of equipment and technology is increasingly available to help people with lots of needs. DYO has experience with problem solving and advice on:
Manual and powered wheelchairs,
Assistive aids to assist a range of tasks,
Pressure care, bed care,
Equipment to assist with standing from bed or chairs, mobility equipment,
Hoists both ceiling and wheeled,
Transfer equipment to cars and passenger modifications,
Small adaptive equipment for daily tasks like eating, showering, toileting,
Workplace equipment like desks hardware arm/wrist positioning aids, accessibility improvements.
Equipment for in the community like activities of swimming, beach access, trail access, bike riding adaptations.
Working with other providers like speech pathologists to establish equipment for swallowing and communication, integrating technology and powered wheelchairs.
Home or other environmental modifications advice or prescription. Could changing your environment (the visible and invisible) make life more optimal for you? DYO may be able to help with:
Home: e.g., ramps, rails, liaising with builders for disability access and use.
Bathrooms: grabrails for showers, bath modifications from cutouts to equipment to full renovations,
Community: outdoor access and activities, advocacy assistance for councils’ footpaths park access etc,
Functional Capacity assessments. An assessment may assist in providing you the breadth of information needed to assist you in identifying your needs. A trauma informed, person centred approach is key and a collaborative process. This assessment can assist liaison with funding schemes like the NDIS.
Reports. They are available on request to assist you in identifying your needs. Specific reports may assist when justification of services are required for funding bodies or otherwise.
Supported Disability Accommodation (SDA) Supported Independent Living (SIL) assessments. To assist you in liaising with the NDIS by working with you to collate a report on your function and needs for supported accommodation providers. If you are not on the NDIS, accommodation assessments may assist you to identify suitable living (or other environmental) arrangements.
Learning through Living Programs (Therapy in life) or Lifestyle Support Programs – DYO can assist you (or your support team) to develop learning programs. Examples may be: accessing the community, finding and developing interest-based, work or educational activities with a personalised participation approach, collaborating with support workers to optimise their time supporting people of all abilities, e.g., kitchen participation. A problem-solving collaborative approach to optimise participation is key, and a lifelong learning approach.
Training for you, or your carers or support workers in areas such as Manual handling including if unique specific individual needs exist; written instruction for training and carer education for other supported activities as may assist to optimise your situation.
Collaborating with health, disability or education professionals, or your informal support networks as you desire.
Second opinion advice including by telehealth.
Peer supervision, coaching and mentoring for clinicians.
